WELCOME TO ROCKY; Comets to Host Queensland Cup Premiers Souths in Season Opener

RUGBY LEAGUE: Central Comets gamebreaker Nat Bowman would love to tackle Souths Logan in round one next year, yesterday declaring victory over the Queensland Cup premiers would set the platform for success in 2009.

The Comets are set to host the Magpies in the season opener at Rockhampton's Browne Park on March 14 following the release of a draft competition draw for next season.

Bowman, this year's Queensland Cup best and fairest medal winner, said a showdown with Souths Logan would be the perfect way to kick-off 2009.

The Magpies stunned Ipswich 24-18 with a try in the final minute to clinch this year's thrilling Queensland Cup grand final.

"If we could do (Souths Logan) in the first round it would do us a favour," Bowman said yesterday.

"I remember just watching that grand final and thinking if we get to play them in round one it gives us a boost.

"It'll also be good to see where we're at."

In the draft draw, the Comets will host northern neighbours Mackay (round 8), competition newcomers the Sunshine Coast (round 9) and Northern Pride (round 10) in consecutive weeks at Browne Park.

However, the club is scheduled to play three out of their last four matches away from home before a final round clash against the Burleigh Bears at Browne Park.

Comets chief executive Scott Minto said yesterday the club was reasonably happy with the make-up of next year's draw but admitted there could be some changes.

One being the Comets' round 15 home match against arch-rivals Redcliffe, with Minto keen to see the game changed to a Sunday afternoon and promoted as a "family day out" at Browne Park.

With Comets captain-coach Wayne Barnett hanging up the boots next season, Bowman said he would be proud to lead the team in 2009 if the opportunity arose.
