Intrepid Girls Hope to Put Roofs over Third World Heads

CAROLINE Watanga has experienced first-hand the suffering of people in poorer countries.

She is originally from the Congo in Africa and feels lucky to have called Rockhampton home for just over a year.

"There was terrible stuff happening in the Congo," she said.

When Caroline heard about the Gawad Kalinga Youth Great Adventure Tour from her friend Elizabeth Harris, she wanted to go just to make a difference for others.

Today, the two 16-year-old girls from The Cathedral College will go to the Philippines for two weeks with the program which allows young people to build houses for those living in poor economies or disaster-stricken areas.

Elizabeth heard of the program through her church and couldn't think of a better way to spend the school holidays.

"We are going to be staying with a family to experience normal life in the Philippines," she said.

"I'm looking forward to building houses for these people and meeting new friends. …
