Thangool Favourite Firms in Trial Run

RACING: TOUGH galloper Umaprince cemented his position as a short-priced favourite for Saturday's $15,000 Thangool Cup (1400m) with a pleasing second behind Love God in a Callaghan Park barrier trial over 1000 metres yesterday.

Umaprince, chasing back-to-back Thangool Cup wins, was not pushed to the line by apprentice Alisha Taylor, running Love God to 1.5 lengths at the finish of the second of 10 trials and three jump-outs in a morning session which lasted about 3.5 hours.

Trainer Mick Hicks, expecting Umaprince to get in the high 60 kilograms weight range for the Cup has engaged Taylor for the ride; taking advantage of her valuable four kilograms allowance.

Love God, which Hicks expected to be the biggest danger to Umaprince at Thangool, was not among the original entries which have been extended until 9am today.

"I have spoken with the owner and Love God is to run in a 1600 metres race in Rockhampton next week," trainer Lyle Rowe said last night. …
