IT will be a bleak old Christmas for some families on the Capricorn Coast this year.

Salvation Army welfare manager for the Capricorn region Ian Jones said requests for assistance had escalated this year and there was little sign of the demand for assistance easing.

"People on low incomes and government benefits are finding it tough to cope with the demands being placed on them with the rising cost of living and the festive season doesn't make things any easier," he said.

"The demand for food and emergency accommodation has gone through the roof, which puts added pressure on organisations such as ours that have limited budgets for assistance, so we are reaching out to the community to ask for a helping hand."

He said the organisation provided assistance through food, budgeting assistance, emergency housing and counselling services for community members and small businesses struggling to survive in the present hard economic times.

Yeppoon-based counsellor for Salvation Army Di (surname withheld for security purposes) said there was no doubt that escalating costs such as fuel, groceries and rent had made life very difficult for people already living on a strict budget. …
