Ponting Sets High Bar for Team Behaviour

CRICKET: AUSTRALIAN captain Ricky Ponting claims he will not stand for anything but the best behaviour from his players during next month's Test series in India, following the ugly scenes of last summer's encounter.

Ponting used his arrival press conference in Hyderabad yesterday to set the bar for player behaviour higher even than what is expected by the public or even what is stipulated by the umpires and match referee, saying it was up to he and Indian skipper Anil Kumble to police their men.

Whether Ponting's words result in a series free of nasty on-field conduct remains to be seen, particularly given the high emotion of cricket played in this part of the world. But following the PR battering his team took after last summer's Sydney Test it was an encouraging sign.

"The important thing is that the captains are responsible for what happens on the field and that's the bottom line. We're responsible for our teams and the way we play our cricket," Ponting said yesterday. …
