Strike Locks Down Prison

POLICE were patrolling the perimeter of Rockhampton's jail last night after prison officers went on strike.

The Capricornia Correctional Centre went into a state of "lock-down".

The dramatic situation occurred after staff walked out in a dispute linked to the death in custody of a 32-year-old remand prisoner on Saturday morning.

The Morning Bulletin understands that guards were incensed by the treatment of one prison officer during the initial police investigation.

It is believed the dispute is directly linked to complaints that a staff member had to sit around in soiled clothing under the direction of detectives who had declared a crime scene.

The officer was told he could not change out of his uniform that had been soaked in the dead man's urine.

A spokesman for Queensland Corrective Services said contingency plans were in place to run the jail with a skeleton staff of managers and medical personnel. …
