'Yak' Loved His Family, Football and His Friends; OBITUARY

Article excerpt

KNOWN to his mates as "Yak", Shane Dwyer was a leading Aussie Rules footballer in Mackay winning a premiership and a best on ground award in a grand final for North Mackay Saints.

Shane Anthony Dwyer was born at the Yarram Hospital in southern Gippsland on June 6, 1957.

He was the fifth child to John Patrick "Jack" and Maureen Teresa Dwyer (nee Hasset).

"Yak" attended the two-room Woodside State School that was accessible by the local small bus for the 10km trip or by pushbike along the dusty gravel roads for the adventurous. He then went to Yarram High School, a 30km trip which was a little too far for pushbikes so the farm motorbike was put into use. He also rode it to go visiting friends on weekends.

Before getting his car license he'd already been fruit picking, roustabouting throughout Victoria with the shearers and ducked over to NZ to do some sightseeing.

After the shearing season in 1976 he teamed up with fellow shearer Eddy Lyons to travel to Perth with the plan being to stop into Broken Hill to do more shearing on the way. The good thing about some plans is that they are adaptable - hence they ended up in Brisbane and then Mackay.

It was in Mackay that he formed many good and lasting friendships through work and playing Aussie Rules. In his time playing with the North Mackay Saints he received many awards including 1978 best and fairest and best on ground in the premiership team of 1983. …
