AN 84-run effort by skipper and middle order batsman Brant Attard propelled Norths to a handy position against Farleigh Magpies after the first day of play in round two of the Poole Cup on Saturday.

Norths compiled a total of 286 and Attard was well supported by Dean Cox (35) and youngster Michael Kay (34).

Club president Wayne Carvolth said the team was "very happy" with their first innings.

"It puts us in a strong position," he said.

After Norths finished fifth in 2007/08, Carvolth said he was pleased with the team's solid start this season.

Norths claimed a first innings victory over Brothers in round one last weekend.

Meanwhile, for Farleigh Magpies, Damien Casey did his best to temper Norths' tally, taking an impressive 6/45 from 18.1 overs.

Daniel Gard (2/30) and Chris Ingham (2/54) also took multiple wickets.
