ROS Sigvart is no stranger to the maternity ward of hospitals or the sound of newborn babies in the corridors.

The Dysart Hospital director of nursing has been a nurse for the past 38 years and still enjoys every moment of her job.

Ms Sigvart loves it so much that she is encouraging retired registered nurses to return to their former careers, and school leavers to think about becoming a nurse.

Her call comes as Queensland Nurses launch their biggest campaign yet in a bid to boost their numbers. The Mackay district, which includes hospitals in Proserpine, Sarina, Moranbah, Clermont and Dysart, is looking for nurses to fill vacancies.

Queensland Health needs around a thousand nurses to fill job vacancies state-wide.

It is estimated there are more than 30,000 trained nurses in Australia who are no longer in the system and in 2008 an additional 500 nursing places will be made available at universities around the country.

Ms Sigvart, who also has a midwifery certificate, said she had been privileged to bring generation after generation of children into the world and could think of no better career. …
