Drink, Drugs before He Bashed Man

LYLE Zemek had been on a 16-hour drinking binge, and had also smoked marijuana, before he robbed and bashed a 68-year-old service station owner near Marlborough.

Terry Burgess suffered cuts and severe bruises about his face and head and still has physical and emotional problems.

Zemek robbed the service station because his car had broken down nearby and he was hungry and had no money.

It was 7.30am on September 21 when Mr Burgess checked his diesel bowser. He turned around and saw Zemek walking out of the service station carrying the cash register.

He yelled at Zemek to stop and approached him. Zemek swung the cash register at Mr Burgess trying to use it as a weapon. But he dropped it. He then punched Mr Burgess repeatedly with closed fists. He picked up $200 and fled across the Bruce Highway into bushland where police later found him and recovered the stolen cash.

Zemek pleaded guilty yesterday in the District Court in Mackay to robbery with actual violence. …
