Recruits Meet New Family, Take Place in City's Thin Blue Line

FOR his first day on the job, Trent Birthisel will polish his shoes, press his shirt and make sure he's clean shaven.

He'll arrive on time and nervously greet his new colleagues.

But at least he won't be alone.

Constable Birthisel, 24, will be joined by some of his closest friends - constable Luke Turner, 23, constable Ryan George, 24, and constable Ben Ramsay, 28.

The four young men have completed six months training at Townsville Police Academy and will today begin their career with Queensland Police in Mackay.

Constable Turner said he was looking forward to hitting the pavements and meeting the locals.

"It will be good to get my face out into the community," he said.

"I've heard nothing but positive reports about Mackay and the officers here.

"They all say the station has a family environment here."

The boys in blue come from a varied background.

Constable Birthisel and Constable George both joined the force for a change of career. …
