$12M Funds Regional Breast Cancer Nurses

WOMEN diagnosed with breast cancer in Mackay will have greater access to support with the announcement of a joint initiative by the Federal Government and the McGrath Foundation.

Under the new initiative the Federal Government will provide $12 million over four years for the McGrath Foundation to provide specialist breast cancer nurses in regional Queensland.

This will provide funding for a breast cancer nurse to work an additional two and a half days a week to help the area's women.

A spokesperson for Queensland Health said it was not yet known whether this initiative would mean the current breast cancer nurse in Mackay would increase her hours to full-time or job share with a new appointee.

Health Minister Stephen Robertson said specialist trained breast cancer nurses played an invaluable role in providing information, supportive care and care co-ordination to women and their families from the point of breast cancer. …
