Incredibly Proud of You

Article excerpt

OUR second year of the 'Absolute Enterprises Raft Race for Childhood Cancer Support' was again a huge success.

Our faithful crews from the first race in 20007 were out there in full force, battling the newcomers.

They donated services and prizes, entered again, raised extra money and were on hand to help not only me but each other in any way they could.

Businesses donated auction prizes, insurance, drinks for the thirsty contestants.

Individuals like Linda Mackenzie and TJ Framing did up a fabulous, signed T-Shirt by medal winning Olympians and Para Olympians.

I could go on forever.

Cozzie Cranes donated their services for two days when they are so busy with their own work and they didn't even have a raft in the event.

Kids sold raffle tickets and volunteers spent the whole day there in the heat, without complaint like so many of them said to me, "as much as we would love to win, this is about team building and more than that, raising money for the kids."

That is the spirit that makes this event unique, in this day and age, especially with the current financial climate.

We even had one team that had to drop out, that still donated their entry fee.

The spirit was contagious with spectators lining the viewing area.

As the organiser of this event I am so incredibly proud of the people involved. They all have such a special spirit.

Without their generosity and support it would not happen and as such we need to support them as local businesses.

I need to mention a couple of people that were not out there, who worked behind the scenes.

It was a bit of a logistical nightmare with works happening on the river and formats being changed but Mackay Regional Council, Main Roads, Maritime Safety Queensland, and our emergency crews SES, VMR and the Mackay Life Savers did everything in their power to overcome the obstacles to help us, in any way they could.

Months of preparation went into the event and our local media fully supported our event and have been behind us 100 per cent.

Many thanks to The Daily Mercury, Hot and Sea Fm and Channel 7, as sponsors of the River to Reef Festival and also our event, the Absolute Enterprises Raft Race 08. Thanks guys.

Congratulations to Absolute Enterprises as our gold sponsor and also winners of the event.

You deserved the win but I know there is some really serious contestants out to destroy you next year.

To the public of Mackay, thank you for supporting the 'Rafties'.

I am so proud to be a part of this community and to know these contestants.

Please remember to support these great businesses that have such a great community spirit.
