Lifespan of Our Dams

Article excerpt

I NOTED with interest several statements from Sun Water CEO Peter Boettcher, in the southern media.

The first was that the Bedford Fabridam (water bladder) at Blackwater was 10 years into its 20-year lifespan.

The second was that the dam water bladders have been operating for more than 10 years in Queensland.

Well, I would like to point out that the Mirani Weir, which has a water bladder, is 21 years old, having been opened on November 3, 1987.

I don't know if this bladder has a 20-year lifespan or not.

A lot of children, including my grand kids swim about 2km downstream at Mirani in the same swimming hole that we used 60 years ago.

When the bladder is fully collapsed the river rises two metres at Mirani.

The bladder should take two to three hours to deflate, however the first small flood in 1988 the wall deflated in around 20 minutes resulting in many farmers losing their irrigating plants.

In Sun Water's defence this was rectified and never happened again.

The 20-year lifespan is interesting to say the least.

Come back De-Anne

JAMES Bidgood has done it again.

No offence, James, but you remind me a little bit of a bird squawking on a perch just to put a feather in its cap.

I am predicting an early Federal election so De-Anne, please consider.

I will always be a De-Anne Kelly supporter and she will always have my utmost respect.

Our law is being eroded

OZ Politicians tell us the federal constitution is old hat, out-dated, not relevant in today's society.

There is continued talk of a republic, yet we rejected the politicians' republic.

It still simmers on the backburner.

When QEII finally abdicates the push will come hard from Turnbull, who is salivating at the prospect.

Our common law constitution binds the crown to protect us from political excess.

They hate the restraint and have worked, bi-laterally since 1901, yes 1901, to erode and undermine it, seen today is the removal of a man's right to control his finances, children can be removed under some power with government as the ultimate parent, reversal of innocent until proven guilty, majority jury verdict rather than unanimous and doing without a jury altogether if you're notorious. …
