RHYS Cronin and Ashleigh Batson are just one Bundaberg couple who have kept the property market healthy over Christmas with the purchase of their first home.

The pair, both in their early 20s, celebrated the new year with the purchase of a four-bedroom home at Kepnock.

Real estate agents around Bundaberg say they have been inundated with couples like Mr Cronin and Ms Batson, despite international trends pointing to a slowdown in the property market.

Their purchase is also evidence of what Real Estate Institute of Queensland regional chairman Michael Dempsey described as the heating up of suburbs close to the city.

"We just didn't want to move somewhere that is too far out of town," Mr Cronin said.

"This place is what we were looking for, in a convenient location and there's a bit of work that we can do on it."

Mr Dempsey said areas such as west Bundaberg were popular.

"The saying used to be 'Don't buy in North Bundy or East Bundy,' but that's not the case anymore," Mr Dempsey said. …
