Shooting for 2009 Season

Article excerpt

Byline: Greg White

APPLICATIONS have been called for the 2009 State League season, for men, women and youth, closing November 18.

A definite game plan for the season has been formulated with the first step being a submission to New South Wales Basketball for formation of a northern Youth League men's competition.

Approval has been given, providing the opportunity for junior men to progress if associations in the north support the competition.

The second part of the plan is the appointment of coaching and managerial staff.

Training dates have been set and it's planned to have a part-time co-ordinator working behind the scenes to ensure the success of the men's, women's and youth league programs.

This position will take a lot of the administrative workload away from managers and game night volunteers and contribute to a more successful program.

High on the priority list for the Association is to boost men's results and perhaps, even bring home that elusive 'gold' for the women.

The women's program has been very successful with our Suns girls placed either second and third in the State and 2009 will see a number of highly talented junior players moving into the senior ranks, improving finals chances.

To help rebuild the men's program, talks are underway with former players, hoping to recruit them into the 'red and gold' of the Suns.

If successful, it will add power to our men's program.

People interested in the coaching or manager's jobs with the three State League teams can download the application form from the CHBA website, or pick one up from the office.

MONDAY skills sessions with development officer Darren Thomas recommence on November 10 at 5pm at Sportz Central.

The sessions are a great opportunity to improve skills with an experienced coach in a relaxed atmosphere, an ideal learning environment for young players who might be thinking about taking up basketball in first term of 2009.

All equipment is provided with players needing to wear sports joggers, socks, shorts and t-shirt. …
