HOW THE WEST WAS WON; Junior Tennis Players from the State's West Take on Some of Our Best

FOR a group of tennis players from the far west of the State, playing in a series of challenge matches against juniors from Tiebreak Tennis of Coffs Harbour Tennis Club wasn't the only highlight of their trip.

Some of the members of the 12-strong squad from the Far West Academy of Sport managed to see the ocean for the first time in their life.

Far West Academy of Sport's coach Ken Wray brought players from towns such as Nyngan, Coonabarabran, Coonamble and Bourke for the challenge matches which were such a success that it is hoped the event will become an annual affair.

The event became a reality thanks to local Tiebreak Tennis coach Danny Sousa who has been making the 10-hour drive west to Nyngan for the past 12 years and has trained a few of the players in the Far West team.

"I was really happy to see these children getting this sort of opportunity," Sousa said.

"It's also great that Ken has been able to organise regular training for these guys. …
