I HAVE been asked by local identity 'Paddy' McGuire to reprint a column I wrote for this newspaper in early 2000 - almost nine years ago.

In 18 years of writing for newspapers, this is the first time I have done such a thing.

But right now, many people are asking where are we up to with the rural residential situation in Coffs Harbour?'

Where have all the meetings, Commissions of Inquiry findings, and heat on the subject gone?

So with one or two exceptions, put in for debate, this column is topical today Other columns around this time and following this piece highlighted the need for environmental considerations, planning and block sizes according to the topography of the land.

Can you imagine the hinterland of Coffs Harbour, just 'over the hill' developed into a beautiful, environmentally-friendly rural residential area.

Well, I can, and so can many

others.

The Orara Valley encompassing all from Friday Creek to Nana Glen and Bucca has the ingredients for district and regional development second to none.

Beautiful scenery with creeks and rivers dotted with green pastures and useful timber abound.

The present Coffs Harbour council and its planners will become famous for their vision and application to what not only that district needs but the city of Coffs Harbour urgently needs - money and people.

In short, agriculture in the City of Coffs Harbour in 2009 is a non-event.

Eighty per cent of the agricultural land in the city is rated agriculturally poor.

With only one or two exceptions, the quality of produce from it is second class.

That small amount of good country is frightfully expensive to keep as a 'tourist asset' and with competition from larger and cheaper country elsewhere, is becoming less and less as the days go by.

The time has come to realise the need for programmed development of this 80 per cent. …
