A YOUNG woman has Daniel McVey to thank for saving her life at Coffs Creek yesterday morning.

Daniel, 26, was enjoying his Builders' Picnic Day on the banks of the creek with his girlfriend, Coral Huggins and her friend, Julia Walker, when he saw the woman enter the water on the high tide near one of the bridge pylons at 11am.

"I saw her go in with goggles. She didn't have flippers," Daniel said.

"I said to my girlfriend 'she's struggling', so I ran into the water and swam to her."

Daniel said by the time he made the frantic dash from the northern side of the creek, the woman was face down in the water and appeared to be lapsing in and out of consciousness.

"I got to her and put her on her side as I swam her to the edge of the creek," he said.

"I got her to the edge and had help from some bystanders to drag her up. They had already rung the ambulance."

Daniel, who has been involved in the surf lifesaving movement and been a competitive swimmer since his youth, began to clear the woman's airways and placed her in the recovery position. …
