Trees Tell Tales of Life, Growth; A Bundaberg Playwright Is Heading to Tasmania to Collaborate on a Major Project

ROD Ainsworth will never forget the flaming poincianas when he grew up on Barolin Street, but not all his memories of trees are as sweet.

"I once climbed a tree to escape screaming kids at my sister's birthday party; another time, my friend fell from our tree house and hurt her thigh," Rod said.

But the local identity never dreamt he would one day pen a play about a tree, to be performed as far north as Cairns and as far south as Hobart.

200ks is a collaboration of seven of Australia's top young playwrights who have been fusing creative forces since participating in last year's national emerging playwrights pilot, working with JUTE Theatre in Cairns.

Rod will fly to Launceston next month to spend three days on the script with his fellow playwrights, leading Australian dramaturge Peter Matheson and JUTE artistic director Suellen Maunder.

"Each of us has written a 10-minute script inspired by a connection to a tree and the 200km radius around it," Rod said.

Rod's script captures the interplay between a woman and daughter as they cart hubby's coffin to the middle of nowhere and his "special tree".

"The tree is central to each of the plays, which raise various themes including growth, the environment and being trapped, whether that is emotional or physical," Rod said. …
