RENEWABLES companies on Teesside have a chance to contribute to a wide ranging investigation into barriers to growing a green collar economy in the North-east.

The Government's Energy and Climate Change Committee is holding an inquiry into "low carbon technologies in a green economy" and has called for written evidence.

Burning questions on global warming - including whether the UK is suffering an investment downturn in low-carbon technologies and how realistic the committee's climate change projections are - will be covered by the inquiry in June. But evidence must be submitted by May 15.

Last year the UK announced an ambitious overall carbon reduction target of 80% by 2050. The inquiry will address how the need to ensure energy security and strengthen the economy can provide an impetus for the development and use of green technologies.

Other areas covered will include how the UK can best exploit the potential for it to become a leader in the development of low carbon technologies; identifying which technologies have the biggest potential; and considering if the Government has done enough in its stimulus package to help the sector. …
