Camping the Pick This Easter; Economic Downturn Means Back to Basics

TENT sales and camp ground bookings have skyrocketed as Warwick families search for cheap getaways this Easter.

Mango Camping's Elizabeth Hartshorn said there had been a "huge" increase in business from local families buying tents and basic camp gear.

"This has been our busiest Easter. Our main customers are families, who would traditionally have headed to the coast for the break," Ms Hartshorn said.

"Economically they are scared by what's happening so they are opting for cheaper holidays."

It's a scenario Wayne Eastwell from Warwick Outdoors and Sports reiterated.

"Once they have the gear, people can head out for a week of camping and spend $500 on food or whatever without skimping on anything," Mr Eastwell said.

"At the coast you are looking at $250 to $300 per night, in tough times that's no choice."

Local camp grounds have also recorded a spike in inquiries.

Debbie Woodforde from Goomburra Valley Camp Ground said despite being booked out since before Christmas she was still being inundated with queries from would-be Easter campers. …
