Jobs Lost in Revamp; Local Mission Australia to Close Its Doors

DESPITE well and truly meeting the Federal Government's performance criteria set out for providers, 17 Gympie Mission Australia staff will lose their jobs at the end of June.

The local branch has not survived the Federal Government's $4 billion overhaul of the Job Network. Mission Australia's executive leader of Employment Services, Leisa Hart said it was a disappointing outcome for the region.

"We have won and lost sites in the tender and we are disappointed at our results in Gympie," Ms Hart told The Gympie Times yesterday.

It's believed several other job agencies, including Wesley Mission and the Catholic and Uniting churches will be forced to sack hundreds of employees across Australia because they have lost government contracts under the new Jobs Services Australia, which is poised to replace the Job Network.

The Australian Services Union says that the restructure could leave many more than 2000 workers unemployed. …
