NEWCASTLE Sapphire Engineering Diamonds are the only team in the country without a point to their name in the Premier Trophy after a 64-26 hammering by holders Edinburgh last night.

Team boss Richard Juul said afterwards: "We cannot keep on having results like this and we are running out of excuses now.

"Yes, Edinburgh are a good side, but we should be able to do much better than that.

"It is very disappointing to see this young team of ours turn in that sort of show.

"I will be looking closely at everyone's performance over the two matches with Glasgow (tomorrow and Monday) to see if changes need to be made." Edinburgh ran up nine maximum 5-1 wins, including a spell of five in succession from heats six to 10 - at which point the Monarchs led 45-15, ensuring a move up the northern group table.

Steve Boxall then became Newcastle's first race winner, wrecking home skipper Matthew Wethers' maximum in heat 11, and three heats later Kenni Larsen did the same thing to the hitherto unbeaten Andrew Tully. …
