A FORMER manager has appeared in court charged in connection with cheating the National Health Service out of thousands of pounds in a "sophisticated" fraud.

Gary Daniels, who was ICT support manager at South Tees NHS Trust, appeared before Teesside Magistrates' Court yesterday to face two charges under the Theft Act 1968, and one contrary to the Fraud Act 2006.

The 40-year-old, from Chaldron Way, Eaglescliffe, is alleged to have commissioned work, some deemed "entirely unnecessary", from another company, but said he would carry it out himself as a sub-contractor, and claimed for it.

He is said to have signed off invoices when submitted by the software development firm, and then billed the company and had the money paid into his bank account.

On January 14 last year, Daniels was arrested at his home on suspicion of obtaining money transfers by deception and conspiracy to defraud by Cleveland Police, accompanied by the local counter fraud service. …
