IN a bid to tackle increasing sewage spills on the Sunshine Coast, nearly 8km of old sewerage-network pipes will be replaced.

The $1.4 million project, using with more technologically advanced piping, is to be completed before the end of the financial year.

A council committee has also recommended accepting a tender for a $5.3 million installation of 16km of high-tech sewerage piping and two pump stations to bring 460 houses on-line in Pomona.

Council's major projects portfolio councillor, Debbie Blumel, said recent sewage spills had highlighted the problems old "dinosaur technology" pipes were causing.

After the heavy rain of recent weeks, raw sewage poured out of manhole covers in several suburban streets.

"It doesn't grab the headlines until you get sewage spills in Alexandra Headland," Ms Blumel said.

She said there were better management systems on the market "which do not put raw sewage into the streets every time there is a rain event". …
