Kangaroo Culling Is a Blight on Australia's National Icon

I AM outraged at the constant red-neck attitude that is rampant throughout our governments in relation to animal culling.

Last year they culled 800 wallabies and kangaroos in the ACT and Tasmania alone.

Now they want to cull/kill more in the ACT. Their concerns are damage to grasslands. A document on the proposed cull refers to them as 'pests' 61 times.

Some facts: Kangaroos do not destroy plant roots when they eat, unlike sheep and cattle.

Their soft padded feet and long tails are integral to the ecological health of the land as they regenerate the native grass.

Joeys flee in terror after their parents are killed, they die from cold, shock, starvation, and maternal deprivation.

A million or more joeys die a slow death this way every year. And they are also violently bashed over bull bars by shooters.

Many shooters are inexperienced, and cause tremendous suffering to the animals.

And they are shooting way too many females, ignoring legal protocols, contributing to the extinction. …
