The famous Mid Lake Pavilion (circa 1784) is the best known tea house in Shanghai.

When the frenetic shopping and hawking ("Want a Rolex watch very cheap? Come with me -") gets too much, go for the tranquillity which lies just beyond the Old Town at Yu Garden, a four century old Suzhou-style garden which embodies the serenity and mystique of Chinese gardens.

For a truly spectacular display of Chinese acrobatic ability, a must is the 'ERA - Intersection of the Time' performance. Forget any preconceptions about acrobatics - this will blow your mind. A multi-media marvel, it incorporates a bit of ballet, a light and sound show, motorbikes in daredevil stunts in a 'ball of death' and performers who beggar the boundaries of belief as they contort high above the stage in a sensitive fusion of old and new culture.

It is one of the best live performances this writer has ever seen.
