IT WAS a day that has stayed with Shirley Clough throughout her life - the day she gave a lucky horseshoe to the bride marrying her Newcastle United hero, Alan Suddick.

The Leazes legend was marrying Arline Cook at St John's Church in Percy Main, North Shields, in 1966, when four-yearold Shirley arrived with her surprise present.

The cute youngster stole the show and was invited to appear on the wedding photos, which appeared in local and national newspapers.

And now, more than four decades later, the two women have been reunited - thanks to the Chronicle.

The wedding picture was shown in our paper earlier this month following the memorial service for Alan, who died aged 64 having battled an infection which ravaged his body.

The Suddick family decided to hold the memorial service for Alan at St John's, as he and his children got married there and his grandchildren were Christened there.

Alan's funeral had been held earlier in Blackpool, where he set up home after becoming known as the King of Bloomfield Road following a record pounds 60,000 move to the club in 1966.

Mother-of-four Shirley, 47, of Courtfield Road, Daisy Hill, Walker, Newcastle, said: "I remember the day, I was in a pretty dress and I waited outside the church for them.

"Our family were all big Newcastle United fans, and my nanna, Frances Butcher, was friends with Arline's grandmother who said I could go along.

"My uncle bought me my dress and my nanna and great aunt took me so I could give the lucky horseshoe to Arline.

"The family lost touch years on and my grandmother died in 2000 at the age of 84.

"It was only when I saw the picture in the paper that I thought of getting back in touch with Arline." Arline, 64, of North Shields, who subsequently seperated from Alan, said: "I remember on our wedding day this beautiful little girl came up to me dressed in a lovely white-and-lemon dress. …
