National Front Rally Sparks City Protest; Confrontation and Struggle

A TENSE stand-off between National Front supporters and anti-fascists took place on the streets of Newcastle today.

A National Front rally, in support of making St George's Day a bank holiday, was being held in the city centre.

It was met by other groups who opposed National Front supporters.

A confrontation began next to the Monument at 11am with the groups standing in front of each other chanting and shouting.

One woman began shouting louder and lunged towards the National Front supporters and was detained by officers.

A struggle began with her eventually falling to the ground and then being dragged down towards Grey Street.

A supporter of Fight Racism, Fight Imperialism, who did not want to be named, said she was upset with the way police were handling the situation and allowing the opposite side to yell racial slurs.

"The National Front was able to mobilise and have a protest. While they are saying it's not racist, their banners clearly are," she said. …
