THE future of the British Grand Prix has been thrown into doubt after the owners of Donington Park launched legal proceedings against the circuit operating company headed by entrepreneur Simon Gillett.

Wheatcroft and Son is suing Gillett's Donington Ventures Leisure for [pounds sterling]2.47million in rent arrears and forfeiture of the 150-year lease that Gillett acquired only 15 months ago.

The move comes as a massive reconstruction project is already under way aimed at turning Donington into the home of Britain's round of the world championship starting next year..

Were Gillett's plans for Donington to fall through as a result of the legal action, this year's British Grand Prix at Silverstone could be the last Formula One race to be held on these shores..

The sport's supremo, Bernie Ecclestone, has insisted that if Donington is not ready to hold the race, it will be removed from the calendar rather than returning to Silverstone. …
