Community Called to Launch New Name for Port of Mackay

RESIDENTS have the chance to become part of their local history by nominating a name for the Port of Mackay.

Transport Minister Rachel Nolan and Member for Mackay Tim Mulherin said residents were invited to submit names for consideration as part of an initiative to rename our port.

Mackay will be the principal office of the new North Queensland Bulk Ports Corporation.

The already existing Mackay Ports Corporation will become part of the new organisation.

The new body will aim to deliver a streamlined process focused on growth and the opportunity for enhancing exports.

Ms Nolan encouraged local residents and groups to come forward with name suggestions that would give the Port of Mackay its own individual character.

"The establishment of a new authority to administer the booming port at Mackay has provided a rare opportunity for local people to put their own stamp on it," Ms Nolan said.

"We need a name that reflects the exciting growth of the port and the vital role it plays in the economy of north Queensland. …
