WITH marker pen in hand, a bingo loving pensioner had his eye on the ball to celebrate a century of birthdays.

Sid Unthank was showered with gifts from well-wishers at Redcar's Crown Bingo club on Saturday.

A regular, the much-loved centenarian fom Skelton sat amongst several huge balloons, three cakes and a host of cards with his friend and 86-year-old carer Irene Gibbons.

The retired bookmaker, who ran a betting shop on Victoria Road in Middlesbrough up until he was 80, said in his 10 years playing bingo his biggest win was a pounds 750 jackpot.

He put his longevity down to having never been married and "a drop of the hard stuff at night", with his favourite tipple being whisky.

Also celebrating her 100th birthday is Edith Snowdon, a lifetime supporter of the Labour Party, who once served some of the grandest people in the land.

Edith moved to London from her North-east home in her mid-teens to work as a domestic.

She witnessed the glamorous parties of the roaring Twenties from below stairs in the bustling capital. …
