ALAN SHEARER claims he must continue to take risks if he is to have any chance of keeping Newcastle in the Premier League.

Shearer's gamble of using Obafemi Martins, Michael Owen and Mark Viduka from the start in last night's 0-0 draw with Portsmouth did not bear fruit, with all three strikers missing chances to secure a crucial victory.

Shearer (below) had said his team would need to win all three of their remaining home games to achieve safety and failure to do so against Pompey left Newcastle three points adrift of safety with only four matches remaining.

The Newcastle boss said: "I'm putting as many forward players on the pitch as possible in the last 15 minutes, knowing I'm taking a gamble and leaving one or two gaps at the back, which our opponents might exploit.

"Even when Viduka was substituted in the second half, he was replaced by another striker in Andy Carroll. The three players I wanted up there all had one very good chance each. …
