Warwick Post Office Removed from the State's Heritage Register; Brisbane and Stanthorpe PO's on Federal Radar, but Not Warwick's

AUSTRALIA Post has moved to assure Warwickites - and lovers of heritage - that our magnificent sandstone post office will be with us forever, despite it having no Federal or State heritage protection.

It turns out one of the Rose City's iconic landmarks was removed from the State Heritage Register without fanfare - or public consultation it would appear - as far back as five years ago.

Inquiries by the Daily News this week have resulted in Australia Post and the Queensland Department of Environment holding each other responsible for the post office's removal from the register.

A spokesman for Environment Minister Kate Jones said on Tuesday the dastardly act was the work of the Federal Government, which objected to its property being controlled by State and local council heritage rules.

But this was contradicted yesterday by an Australia Post spokeswoman, who said it would be "highly unusual" for a building like our post office to be taken off a State Heritage list, but said she would follow up on it. …
