YOU may be used to seeing him in the boardroom or the stands of St James's Park.

But these snaps show ex-Toon chairman Freddy Shepherd before he made his millions.

He is pictured play-fighting with former schoolpal John Eric Mussett when the pair grew up together in Byker, in Newcastle's East End.

Other images show them camping in Plessey Woods and posing for the camera with a group of girls.

Mr Mussett said: "That picture shows us in a back lane, around 1954/5, when we found a shield and a couple of brooms.

"We were just having a bit of a carry on.

Freddy grabbed the shield and I grabbed the bin lid.

"Another picture below shows us in the early 1950s camping in Plessey Woods. I am on the left, John Simpson is in the middle, Freddy is on the right and George Jeffrey is in the front.

"We were all in St Cuthbert's Youth Club, and Freddy's dad Charlie Shepherd would use his lorries to take everyone, including the tents, camping. …
