CANCER never sleeps, which is why about 300 people will be pulling an all-nighter at Kawana's Stockland Park tonight.

That is the estimated number of people who have signed up to take their turn walking around the 400-metre oval in 18 hours in Cancer Council's Relay for Life.

This year's event has drawn 28 teams, one up on last year, which spokeswoman Dot Billingham said was a good result given that the inaugural event had been boosted by five teams from one school.

The teams include the Blood Drop Bandits, a team of 13 staff, donors and family members, including two children, from the Red Cross blood bank.

Maroochydore blood donor centre liaison officer Rebecca Ind said about 34% of blood donations went to cancer patients, far outweighing the proportion used for any other purpose.

"One of the reasons that we're getting involved with the relay is that there's a lot of synergy between the two organisations, the Red Cross and the cancer council," she said. …
