Cathedral Centre Closes Doors; Businesses Run at {Lsquo}substantial Loss'

THE St Patrick's Cathedral Centre will close after Father Peter Dorfield announced it can not service its $2.22 million debt.

Paddy's Cafe will shut for the final time on Friday, while the adjoining function centre will not take bookings after December 19.

Both businesses have been operating at a loss for the past eight years and were unable to repay the diocesan loan, parishioners were told at the weekend.

In fact, the Toowoomba Catholic Diocese has been paying the interest on the outstanding loan for the past four years.

The operation has been run by a Cathedral Centre manager, functions manager and chef.

These three workers will lose their jobs, along with a team of casual staff.

Paddy's Cafe has been operating at a "substantial loss from the very beginning", Fr Dorfield said.

"The cost of operating Paddy's Cafe is almost double the income that the cafe generates," he told parishioners. …
