TEES Valley's newest landmark has earned a top award.

Pictured right, the pounds 15m Infinity Bridge at Stockton - which is due to be officially opened on May 14 - has triumphed at the Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE) North East's Robert Stephenson Awards, being named the winner in the Over pounds 4m category.

It was jointly submitted for the awards by the client, Stockton Council and Tees Valley Regeneration, and the contractor Balfour Beatty Civil Engineering.

Consultant on the job was Expedition Engineering and project management was by White Young Green.

Judges said: "The project team has delivered an imaginatively engineered pedestrian and cycle bridge across the River Tees with an efficient use of materials that demonstrates local construction skills, acts as a catalyst for regeneration, encouragement for sustainable journeys and is a landmark much appreciated by the community." Awards come in the year that marks the 150th anniversary of the civil engineering pioneer and bridge builder's death. …
