Gladstone Soccer Stars Are Rising in the CQ Representative Program

AN army of budding Gladstone soccer stars will invade Rockhampton at the weekend to take part in the Central Queensland Representative Program.

Gladstone Region Director of Coaching, John Sunderland, said 154 kids from Gladstone will take part in the program, with that number likely to grow to around 190 when Junior Premier League (JPL) participants are included.

"We've had kids training from March and instead of having one training a week with their club, they are now having an extra session as part of the representative program," he said.

He said six boys teams and five girls teams from Gladstone, ranging from under-11s to under-16s, will battle it out against teams from Rockhampton, the Capricorn Coast and Biloela in the first leg of the competition.

The location of the meet will then switch between locations during the year, except Biloela, which has does not have suitable grounds due to severe water restrictions.

Although the program was implemented last year, Sunderland said it was a whole new program that focused on giving kids who would not normally have the opportunity to train or compete at a higher level the chance to develop their skills. …
