IF Mark Visser could use one word to describe his remarkable "get out of jail" effort at Tahiti's famed Teahupoo break yesterday, it would probably be relief.

The Sunshine Coast surfer nailed a decisive ride with just 50 seconds remaining in his round three Air Tahiti Nui Von Zipper trials heat.

In fourth position heading into the dying stages, Visser scored an 8.7 from the judges for his late long tube ride to win the heat.

In doing so, Visser joined Caloundra's Wade Goodall in the round of 16 to edge closer to the coveted lone wildcard up for grabs into the ASP World Tour's Billabong Pro Tahiti.

Coolum's Julian Wilson featured in the same heat as Visser, but was eliminated after finishing third.

"Classic, that was close," Visser said.

"I'm happy to see another day, that's for sure. I needed a scoring wave in the last 50 seconds and got an 8.7 to make the last day.

"I knew I could do it. I just had to stay calm and wait for a wave that would open up. …
