Junior Ohl Continues Dad's Super Stockers Tradition

SPEEDWAY: The name Ohl appears on the trophy for the Australian Super Stockers, but this time it is not Jeff, but his son Chris taking the honour.

For drivers in their first season of racing it is nearly always a steep learning curve.

That is not the case for Chris Ohl as he has taken the track by storm and made 2009 a year to remember.

When interviewed earlier this year Chris told T he Morning Bulletin his aim was to beat his highly successful father fairly and squarely on the track.

That ambition has now been well and truly achieved with Ohl junior beating his dad at Rockhampton to finish second in the Queensland Titles and then at the weekend taking the grand prize for this class of racer when winning the Australian "Outlaw" Title at Mackay.

So what does dad think about being upstaged by his "novice" son?

"He's good with it," said Chris holding on to his shiny trophy.

"After the race he was the first come to my window and throw his hand in (to congratulate).

"He is very proud."

Chris had proved his worth in the heats by qualifying in second place behind the Mackay ace Lyndsay Hawkings.

The 40-lap feature race appeared to be going the same way with Chris keeping with Hawkings, but unable to get past him.

"He was the one to beat," Chris said.

"Then he had a mechanical failure on a restart.

"Up to then I'd just been trying to keep upwith him."

Hawkings's demise came about three-quarters of the way through the feature race and left Chris with about 10 pulsating laps of racing to cling to the lead and take the chequered flag.

It was not easy as on his tail was Moranbah racer Brendon Farram, who had been fast all through, and, of course, Jeff Ohl.

The hardest part for Chris was maintaining concentration throughout the 40 laps on a track that boasts long straights and tight bends. …
