Charity Cup Starts; Diggers and BAV Battle in Opener on Bundy's Historic Title

FOOTBALL: A 76-year association between Bundaberg Soccer and the NewsMail continues at Martens Oval tomorrow night with round one of the NewsMail Charity Cup.

Now in its 76th year, the first game of 2009 will be played between Diggers and Brothers Aston Villa.

Football Bundaberg president Greg Bath said the cup had a long and proud history of donating money to charity.

"It's an annual event and this is the 76th year," Bath said.

"I think there was a lull for about three years during the second world war.

"Once the war was over the competition resumed."

Teams from the modern day Archem Premier League compete for the cup in a separate competition to their season proper.

Cup results have no bearing on the Archem competition.

The final will be played on June 8, but this year's beneficiary is yet to be announced.

"We nominate the charity about two weeks before the final," Bath said.

"All the gate takings from the day go to that charity. …
