Standing Up to Help Victims of Bullying; {lsquo}Disgusted' Teen Takes Lead Role in Youth Forum Being Held Next Month

MULLUMBIMBY student Djuaan Cockatoo, 15, has seen the effects of bullying on his friends.

"It's disgusting to put someone in that kind of space where they are lonely and depressed and not feeling anyone is looking out for them," he said.

"It degrades them and they get left out of lots of social things that can lead to depression.

"I have one really close friend who often gets bullied just so they can see him get angry and get in trouble. They think it is funny so they try to push him and corner him, but it's not funny on his part."

Djuaan feels so passionately about the issue that he has volunteered to give up his free time to act as one of the facilitators at an upcoming forum on youth bullying to be held at Wollongbar TAFE on June 3.

"I was interested in the whole thing," he said. "I don't want to be part of bullying; I want to be part of stopping it."

He said it was important to raise people's awareness of the issue, 'to get it out there so people know its happening'. …
