Let's Think Again on What Is Important; VOICE OF THE NORTH

THERE will be many consulting their Bibles or Old Almanacs or simply looking at tea leaves. I am surprised that the letters are not flooding in.

Others must have wondered why mankind was not wiped out by black death or a highly toxic cold virus.

Well, it's all about Darwin: we will survive and viruses will survive, including this one, but we will adapt and they will adapt.

I see the need to learn from this. Yes, we are prepared and the Government has done well in its preparation, or rather the hard-nosed medical advisers have. But, let's just think: given such a threat, what is important? Life itself, yes. But far more important is how we live our lives and the greater respect we should give to our vulnerability with respect to Nature.

Whenever a global threat appears, it exercises minds greatly. The need to work together for the common good is once again emphasised.

So, forget the credit crunch, let's get on with life.

We have individually so many years on this planet. …
