Comp Brings out the Poker Faces; Field of 90 Players Turn out for 2009 Warwick Poker Open

POKER may now be classified as a sport but it is a game of the mind and more than 90 players took part in the Warwick Poker Open (WPO) at the Warwick RSL Club on Saturday - to make their dream come true of winning big.

Australian Poker League (APL) manager and Warwick resident Matthew Ross said the WPO was held once a year bringing players from Brisbane, Toowoomba and Gold Coast.

"The prize pool for WPO is $2800 and the winner of this event will go to Crown Casino held in Melbourne in August," Mr Ross said.

"They will play in a $500,000 tournament there (in Melbourne) which is the APL Grand Slam - WPO is open to any player who wants to come and play; it's free to play.

"Poker is a very sociable activity, great social atmosphere and brings a good mixture of people from different backgrounds - you have pensioners, people living in retirement homes, unemployed people and young people playing poker."

Mr Ross said a good trait of a poker player was patience and practice. …
