AMID the dreary gloom and doom of the economic storm, a light spring breeze is breathing life and colour into the new season's fashion, with beautiful pinks, greens and purples merrily blowing through the high street.

Nowhere is this new optimism more apparent than in handbags - once sensible in brown and black, now beautiful and zesty fresh in sunny summer hues that make you smile.

Is this a sign that things are taking a turn for the better? Let's hope so.

Sara Strangeway, buyer at the new Collections boutique in the MetroCentre's Yellow Mall, is delighted with the upturn in colour.

"I just adore the new season's range," she says.

"It makes you feel good about life again, which is what we all need.

"We have bags in the most gorgeous colours; fiery pinks and reds, the most covetable purples, these cheerful zesty fresh greens and some lovely blue tones.

"You don't have to worry about what you wear them with because they joyfully go with everything. The colour clash trend gives us the freedom to match what we jolly well like. It's a lovely way to put an outfit together, very positive and cheerful." Belsay Hall and Gardens in Northumberland proves a great location for spring fashions, where the mossy greens and muted shadows of the Quarry Gardens make a delightful backdrop to the wonderful clashes of colour between the bags and the spring and summer dresses from Mannequin boutique in Eldon Garden, Newcastle.

Mannequin owner Clare Rushton sees a similar trend in colour for clothing this season.

For her the look is inspired by memories of beach huts, deck chairs and candy floss of British holidays by the sea, full of romantic florals and exotic prints for an effortlessly stylish summer wardrobe.

"Spots, checks and stripes in clashing colours are creating a strong statement, while soft palate florals are teamed with frills, frills and more frills for a pretty romantic look," Clare says.

She opened Mannequin in Eldon Garden just a year and a half ago, after following a dream to bring to the fashion-loving public quality labels and beautiful clothes one cut above the high street, but without the price tags normally associated with good design. …
