IT was a raspberry that reminded me of a great national tradition.

You know the one - where prime ministers are booed from the rafters when they insinuate themselves into major sporting event ceremonies where they are not needed.

Only this time, the heckling was directed at a politician who wasn't even there.

Just the mention of Anna Bligh during formalities at last Saturday night's Beef Ball in Rockhampton attracted a simultaneous boo from sections of the 1000-plus crowd - almost as if it were rehearsed.

Obviously new tree-clearing laws were still a raw nerve with some rural producers.

I don't intend to weigh into that debate.

To be brutally honest, you could sign me up to the Anna Bligh fan club after she last week signed our petition of support for a CQ NRL team (I can hear a groan coming from a schoolteacher mate of mine already).

But again, that's another issue I'll stay out of.
