Looking Right on the Night; Crafting a Memorable School Formal Is Serious Business

FASHION houses and beauty parlours are bursting at the seams as Ipswich teenagers get ready to party.

Formal season has officially kicked off and the city's high school students are not settling for second best.

Faith Lutheran College student Katie Gehrke, 16, has already bought a dress for her formal in November and said she is taking the preparation very seriously.

"It is the only reason I am still at school," Katie joked as she wriggled out of a purple strapless in the changing rooms.

The school formal is big business these days.

The Rosewood teen said she would be $500 worse off after her hair had been coiffed, nails buffed and shoes matched perfectly with her dress.

"You are not trying to out do everyone but you want to look great," she said.

"It is definitely worth it."

Elly-Rae Fashions of Rosewood owner Elly Currie said her dress fitting diary was full of bookings for soon-to-be school leavers.

"It is just getting bigger and bigger every year with the formal dresses," Ms Currie said. …
