DURHAM fencing starlet Lucy Ridsdale's goal of competing at next year's Commonwealth Games were given a huge boost - after she received a pounds 1,000 windfall from the Lloyds TSB Local Heroes initiative.

For the second year running, the 17-year-old was handpicked as one of 250 youngsters nationwide to receive funding - and also expert tuition from the likes of five-time Olympian Mark Foster.

The Durham Johnston School pupil would not be able to chase her dream of going to Delhi without the extra backing.

She said: "My main aim is the senior Commonwealth Games next year, but I need to move my ranking up a bit first.

"I am taking a bit of a break at the moment, but I should be back into action when the season starts again. I was on the scheme last year and it helped me enormously.

"I have been over to Hungary to train, and I would not have been able to do that if I had not had the funding help.

"It was brilliant getting advice from guys like Mark, who have been to the Olympics and know what it is all about and also getting to meet a lot of likeminded people on the scheme. …
